“Give Us Wisdom” Part 1

Some time ago, I read some very good advice on a blog from what appears to be a godly, wise woman. The response was overwhelming. “Give us more wisdom” several said eagerly.

This request bothered me then, and has stuck with me. Are we ever to seek wisdom from people? What this lady had to say was well-written and helpful advice. She may have in fact been appropriating God-given wisdom for her family. But for me to appropriate her advice would necessitate God-given wisdom to know if it would apply to my situation.

Bottom line: God promises wisdom to those who ask for it and search for it passionately. You can’t read it from a blog. You can’t save it (think of Solomon). You can’t bottle it up and give it to your children when they leave the house (although we can teach them to value it, and teach them how to get it). Like manna, wisdom rots when you store it, but a daily supply is readily available.

What? You need wisdom? Me too! Let’s get cracking!

Proverbs 2:1-6
My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
4 If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD,
And find the knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;

I hope you have enjoyed reading my blog, but my greatest desire for my audience is that they would be inspired and motivated to search the scriptures for themselves. God promises to give wisdom to any believer who searches for it His way. Here are some Bible study links I have found of interest and help.

Chronological Bible: ESV

Read the Bible chronologically. The first time I read through the Bible in the order everything happened, I learned so much and gained an incredible understanding of the big picture of Scripture. If you've never done it, you should!

Bible Gateway

From this website you can search for scriptures in a number of versions and languages by key words, phrases, or references. I use this website often when I post Scripture on my blog, so then I don't have to worry about typing in the verse accurately.

Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

This is a fantastic online version of a classic reference tool. Basically this is a list of cross references based on particular passages. Simply click on the verse or passage you are studying, and you will find other references to other relevant Scripture.

Bible Commentaries Online

A list of classic Bible commentaries. Sometimes they're hard to understand, but they can be helpful when you're wanting more insight into a passage you are studying.

More Bible Study Resources

This is a page of links for articles and audio on the topic of studying the Bible. Some are not easy to read, but they are helpful.
The rest of this website has a tremendous amount of resources that may be of interest.
