Dependence

Posted by Michelle under: In the Car and on the Go; .

We depend on God for our very breath, and yet we really don’t always live like it.

Lee’s commander gave him permission to take me to the airport (his team was supposed to travel together to the airport, no exceptions). As I left Lee with David and Laurel to change Bethel in the bathroom, I thought in horror, “What if I had to do this by myself?” And I remembered in amusement that I have. In that case, I found a quiet spot in the terminal, and changed her on the floor. I guess we often think “I could never [fill in the blank]” but the truth is, we can and we do, all the time.

However, when you’re all alone in an airport, you sometimes do have to ask for help, when you would really rather not. What would I have done if David had to go potty in the airplane? I could never deal with that. I wouldn’t like it much, but I’d probably find a mom and ask her to sit with Bethel, and take the baby with me. What would I have done if the luggage was too much for me to carry along with navigating the stroller? You find help.

It’s a particular blessing to depend on other believers. God sent a friend from church to give of herself by picking me up from the airport when I go home. I had been scheming (Jacob-like) how to do it myself. You know, I needed to humble myself and ask for help. Yes, it’s an inconvenient drive, over an hour long. It’s time out of her day, and although she is happy to serve me in this way, it is inconvenient. But God gives us both grace, and we are both blessed by giving and receiving. May we recognize that we need both God and other believers. Edification isn’t just what we do for others; it’s what we receive.

By the way, we arrived safely. The children haven’t been eating. I stayed up too late talking. There are apricots to pick. I miss my husband.
