Just Ask

My dear oldest son has the unusual capacity of metacognitive skills, that of knowing how and what he’s thinking. Ask him what he’s thinking about, or why he did such-and-so, and you’ll often get a cogent answer. (Not always. After all, he is four years old.) So occasionally, I have this brilliant idea when I’m challenged by his behavior: Ask him about it, and talk about it. Amazing, isn’t it?
Now it is a little tricky, because he also doesn’t like being put on the spot, he doesn’t like to be pushed, and he doesn’t like to feel like you’re trying to get information out of him. (I’m learning about how my husband works here, too!) But casual questions while our hands are busy doing something can be effective. I should probably pray about our conversations beforehand. Yes, that’s it. Prayer. We should all pray more. 
So today, I’m going to ask David about why he doesn’t sing in church. I’ll keep you posted on his response.
