Doctrine

This morning in our ladies Sunday school class, our teacher continued her series on how we got our Bible. I was feeling a little wistful that we could actually learn something useful, even though I knew this was a valuable series for several ladies in particular.

One of the verses we read was II Timothy 3:16. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. I wrote that from memory. I’ve read it for a number of Bible classes. It’s a keystone doctrine passage for our reliability in the word of God. But I’ve never thought of it as actually affecting my daily life.

This morning, I realized that it SHOULD affect my daily life. Here, Paul plainly says that the Bible is the source of my ability to become a mature Christian mother. It’s like Proverbs, but in the New Testament. It tickled me to no end, and I’m still thinking with amazement how I never appropriated this passage in this way. Yes, I know that the Bible is important, but God used this passage to remind me of this truth.

Even though I may be tired, even though there may be dishes in the sink, even though my children may interrupt my time with God, I still need to be going to God’s Word each day.  I think this is the verse we will talk about this week at breakfast, and thank the Lord for giving us everything we need to do His Will right now.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my blog, but my greatest desire for my audience is that they would be inspired and motivated to search the scriptures for themselves. God promises to give wisdom to any believer who searches for it His way. Here are some Bible study links I have found of interest and help.

Chronological Bible: ESV

Read the Bible chronologically. The first time I read through the Bible in the order everything happened, I learned so much and gained an incredible understanding of the big picture of Scripture. If you've never done it, you should!

Bible Gateway

From this website you can search for scriptures in a number of versions and languages by key words, phrases, or references. I use this website often when I post Scripture on my blog, so then I don't have to worry about typing in the verse accurately.

Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

This is a fantastic online version of a classic reference tool. Basically this is a list of cross references based on particular passages. Simply click on the verse or passage you are studying, and you will find other references to other relevant Scripture.

Bible Commentaries Online

A list of classic Bible commentaries. Sometimes they're hard to understand, but they can be helpful when you're wanting more insight into a passage you are studying.
