Prerequisites for a Discussion on Biblical Discipline

Posted by Michelle under: Discipleship; .

Today in our Bible Study we began the chapter (part 1) on discipline. I’m a little nervous about this chapter because I’m fairly certain I don’t fit in the non-spanking camp, but neither do I fit squarely in the spanking camp. In short, I have a great desire to be faithful to the Word of God, to be submissive to God’s authority (even if I don’t like it), and I know I have much to learn. As I work to study the lesson, and as we talk about it as a group, I’ll probably be writing more about the topic here. Be patient!

It’s important to note that my mom didn’t put the discipline chapter first. Before we study discipline, we studied what makes Christian parenting truly Christian (hint: it’s not the spanking). We are reminded of the Christian parent’s secret ingredient (you’ll find it in Proverbs 2), and we must consider how to really love and understand our children, the Bible way. Sometimes, simply understanding basic child development can give us tremendous insight into the motives and abilities of our children.

We spent about half our time reviewing these prerequisites, and the rest of the time examining Hebrews 12:5-11. We’ll talk about that tomorrow, perhaps.
