When Do I Need God the Most?

When do you need God the most? It’s probably not the most accurate question, but it’s how I framed it first in my mind. Truthfully, we so desperately need God every second of every day that it’s not a matter of needing God more or less.

Maybe the question could be framed more biblically. Perhaps, when am I most vulnerable spiritually? or when am I most likely to sin?

I can think of a lot of answers, actually.

  • We’re vulnerable when we take our eyes off our God, and on ourselves. Adam and Eve, for starters. They were drawn into the net of sin by their own selfish desires, just like James tells us we are snared: “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.” (1:14)

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3

  • We’re vulnerable when we place our confidence in ourselves– I Corinthians 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

Can you think of more Scripture?

The reason I started thinking about needing God was that I am spending the next two weeks in California with my family (husband and children, too). It’s one of the hardest times for me to be faithful reading my Bible and having a close walk with God. I enjoy talking and spending time with my family, so sometimes it’s hard to take the time with God I need to. And somehow, it seems that I don’t “need” wisdom as much, largely because my children are entertained by the cousins much of the time.

But the illusion that I don’t need wisdom or time with God is dangerous. Actually spending time with God gets my thinking straight. Guess that’s next on the to do list, after a few hours of sleep.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my blog, but my greatest desire for my audience is that they would be inspired and motivated to search the scriptures for themselves. God promises to give wisdom to any believer who searches for it His way. Here are some Bible study links I have found of interest and help.

Chronological Bible: ESV

Read the Bible chronologically. The first time I read through the Bible in the order everything happened, I learned so much and gained an incredible understanding of the big picture of Scripture. If you've never done it, you should!

Bible Gateway

From this website you can search for scriptures in a number of versions and languages by key words, phrases, or references. I use this website often when I post Scripture on my blog, so then I don't have to worry about typing in the verse accurately.

Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

This is a fantastic online version of a classic reference tool. Basically this is a list of cross references based on particular passages. Simply click on the verse or passage you are studying, and you will find other references to other relevant Scripture.

Bible Commentaries Online

A list of classic Bible commentaries. Sometimes they're hard to understand, but they can be helpful when you're wanting more insight into a passage you are studying.

More Bible Study Resources

This is a page of links for articles and audio on the topic of studying the Bible. Some are not easy to read, but they are helpful.
The rest of this website has a tremendous amount of resources that may be of interest.
