Small Changes

Sometimes I think we believe that spiritual growth happens in big steps. Or we focus on our past failures and forget about making right choices now.

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

I was reviewing some things this week. I started off the year reading the Bible chronologically, but I got distracted and started my aimless, undisciplined (although pleasant) wandering through the Bible. I need to get back on track, today.

I also reviewed my “Bible reading motivation” passages. These are what I read when I feel like I’ve lost my focus, when my motivation is running low, or when I want something fun to read. Sometimes it’s Psalms 119; this week it was Proverbs 2. What I realized was that I’ve been talking about my need for wisdom, halfheartedly searching for wisdom (see above), and not really praying about what I need wisdom for. I’ve prayed, “I need wisdom” and then started brainstorming about how I was going to solve my discipline challenges.

So I spent a good bit of time being more specific in how I was asking and searching for wisdom. That was a big help.

That’s all for today.
