Pleasant Discipline an Oxymoron?

11th December 2008 | 0 Comments

One of the young men in our church read this passage last night, and I thought it would be good for me to think about it some more, in the context of child rearing. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the [...]

After I’ve Been Impatient

10th December 2008 | 4 Comments

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.  And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25 Earlier I mentioned [...]

Executive Gender Decision

9th December 2008 | 0 Comments

I announced to the children that they would henceforth be disallowed from changing gender when they pretend to be animals. I hesitated about this for awhile. I don’t want to draw attention to something that right now is of minor importance. And yet, I do want them in the habit of being thankful for the [...]

Countering Selfishness

8th December 2008 | 1 Comment

Which is easier at Christmas, to help children be givers, or takers? I’m learning that the easy, default setting for Christmas is to simply give children gifts, tell them it is more blessed to give than receive, and leave it at that. Helping children choose or make gifts for others is time consuming. So is [...]

Change of Plans

5th December 2008 | 0 Comments

Today is a busy day. I’d like to be more patient. So instead of finishing my post, I’ll save it for next week. I’m going to read my Bible some more instead. Have a good weekend!

Impatience, or Anger?

4th December 2008 | 1 Comment

I’ve long been aware of my tendency to become impatient with my children throughout the day. It’s not a weekly occurrence; it’s daily and some days, hourly! Now, if I had a problem with screaming and throwing books and spoons, then I’d think “Wow. I have a sin problem.” But impatience is so common and [...]

The Source of Enjoying Things

3rd December 2008 | 2 Comments

This morning we talked about Thankfulness. I’m making a deliberate effort to be ready for Christmas early by baking ahead, but I also want to deliberately teach my children the joy of giving, and the joy of receiving humbly. Right now I see the greediness starting to grow, and as I pondered the problem, I [...]

Giving Gifts to Selfish Children?

2nd December 2008 | 1 Comment

It’s interesting, isn’t it, that we make a ceremony of preparing for Christmas before the turkey has finished cooling? We have one day set aside to thank the Lord for every good and perfect gift, and then we immediately turn to a holiday that for many people is about receiving gifts. My reaction is to [...]

Post-Vacation Discipline

1st December 2008 | 0 Comments

I’ve noticed that the discipline needs of my children seem more apparent after a vacation. It’s possible that during vacations we stop consistently disciplining and then we reap the consequences, but I think it’s just as likely that there’s something about vacations and company that make us more aware of how we are currently teaching [...]

I hope you have enjoyed reading my blog, but my greatest desire for my audience is that they would be inspired and motivated to search the scriptures for themselves. God promises to give wisdom to any believer who searches for it His way. Here are some Bible study links I have found of interest and help.

Chronological Bible: ESV

Read the Bible chronologically. The first time I read through the Bible in the order everything happened, I learned so much and gained an incredible understanding of the big picture of Scripture. If you've never done it, you should!

Bible Gateway

From this website you can search for scriptures in a number of versions and languages by key words, phrases, or references. I use this website often when I post Scripture on my blog, so then I don't have to worry about typing in the verse accurately.

Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

This is a fantastic online version of a classic reference tool. Basically this is a list of cross references based on particular passages. Simply click on the verse or passage you are studying, and you will find other references to other relevant Scripture.

Bible Commentaries Online

A list of classic Bible commentaries. Sometimes they're hard to understand, but they can be helpful when you're wanting more insight into a passage you are studying.

More Bible Study Resources

This is a page of links for articles and audio on the topic of studying the Bible. Some are not easy to read, but they are helpful.
The rest of this website has a tremendous amount of resources that may be of interest.
