Yesterday in Bible study we talked about a passage that gives me hope as a Christian [insert specific role here].

For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. (Hebrews 5:14)

This verse teaches us something of God’s expectation of us. We are not expected to be instantly mature, instantly exceptional Bible teachers of our children, instantly experts at finding the right passage for the right problem. All that takes work, and just as important, it takes time.

It is normal to feel awkward as we practice discernment. Sometimes we’ll get it wrong. Sometimes we’ll feel like we’re not making progress. But see, as we take God’s word and apply it, even imperfectly, the Holy Spirit helps us to grow. We get better. The process is expected. So is the imperfection.

Sometimes when we fail, we think all is lost. We imagine that we’re displeasing God by our failure. Remember what Jesus says? Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them. He gives grace to the humble ones. When we earnestly practice using Scripture in our daily lives, seeking Him first, and recognizing our need for him, he is delighted to help us.

Remember that our God gently leads those with young.

He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young. (Isaiah 40:11)
