Because I want to teach them that we can do right even when we don't feel like it (something I still am working on), I often say, "I don't always want to do right either, but we still must obey God." Other times I might simply respond, "Say yes, ma'am." My goal is a good response first, and then we can talk about it afterward. (along those lines, last night Laurel wanted to use my bathroom, I told her no, she burst in to tears and demanded why, I told her to obey cheerfully and then come ask why, she did and I did)

I like "change your thinking . . ." So when the sassy child responds, "I don't want to change my thinking." how would you respond? This is a new development (disrespect) in our home and I am praying for wisdom! Yesterday I explained to her what back talking was and that she would be disciplined for it, because it has gotten bad fast, and you are right, ignoring disrespect only makes it worse!
