Refraining from the Lecture

22nd July 2010 | 0 Comments

I’ve been pondering this verse in relationship to my role as mother. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. James 1:19-20 It’s one I tell my children often, particularly the “slow to wrath” part.  [...]

Talking to the Quiet One

9th June 2010 | 6 Comments

I’ve been challenged in recent weeks to persist in talking with my son. My impression has been that he’s pretty quiet, and he is. When I started paying attention, though, I realized how often he talks and I’m not particularly interested. It’s not that I don’t care about snakes, birds, and electronics; however, I’m looking [...]

Just a Minute

2nd February 2010 | 3 Comments

I was talking yesterday about how we interact with our children when they come with a request. In the past, I’ve said “just a minute,”  usually so I can finish what I’m doing before I respond. I’m very distractible, and not just with things I want to avoid. Just this week, twice I’ve left coffee [...]

Anger at the Supermarket

29th January 2010 | 1 Comment

Let it never be said that my own children are not sinners, that they never have bad attitudes, and that they never embarrass me at the grocery store. Now, I regularly take all three children grocery shopping with me. Because we do it all the time, we have a routine. I’ve learned that keeping them [...]

Wipe that Frown

25th January 2010 | 2 Comments

I’ve noticed that my three ear old has developed a rather impressive poochie lip when she’s unhappy. She curls her upper lip until she nearly blocks off her nostrils, all to show mom that she is not pleased with whatever situation God has given her. I sense the need to intervene. I could ignore the [...]

Mom and Dad or Husband and Wife

28th September 2009 | 0 Comments

Lee and I were discussing how the concept of marriage is sometimes difficult for young children. Laurel, and sometimes Bethel (2 and 4) will ask a lady, “Where is your dad?” when they are looking for her husband. Occasionally we’ll ask questions about relationships. (eg., How is Uncle Bryan and Uncle Mark related to Daddy?) [...]

Teaching Babies the Bible

18th December 2008 | 0 Comments

The other night came across a journal I kept right after I had Bethel, when David was 16 months old. What struck me the most was the intensity with which I wrote about teaching David spiritual truths. In the past, I’ve shocked a few people with “low expectations,” because I tend to think smart parents [...]

We Pray Because…

24th November 2008 | 0 Comments

I faithfully asked my children why we pray for our food, as I mentioned in this last post. My children looked at me blankly. “The Bible says to?” asked Bethel after a long silence. “Very good! Can you tell me what the Bible says?” Nope. Still teaching, still repeating, still questioning. Enter into his gates [...]

Hitting the Dog

6th November 2008 | 0 Comments

Every once in awhile I discover that I’ve held some faulty belief and it’s always a shock to have to change how I think about it. I always assumed that young children are naturally kind toward animals. I’m sure that some probably are, but I’ve been surprised at how long it has taken for our [...]

Helping Toddlers See Discipline as an Adornment

1st November 2008 | 0 Comments

Jay Younts (who wrote the book Everyday Talk) answers this question from a reader: What advice do you have in helping a two year old to view discipline as “an adornment” and not merely as correcting bad behavior? He gives three ways: countenance tone of voice praying when we discipline, discipline that is not vengeful [...]

I hope you have enjoyed reading my blog, but my greatest desire for my audience is that they would be inspired and motivated to search the scriptures for themselves. God promises to give wisdom to any believer who searches for it His way. Here are some Bible study links I have found of interest and help.

Chronological Bible: ESV

Read the Bible chronologically. The first time I read through the Bible in the order everything happened, I learned so much and gained an incredible understanding of the big picture of Scripture. If you've never done it, you should!

Bible Gateway

From this website you can search for scriptures in a number of versions and languages by key words, phrases, or references. I use this website often when I post Scripture on my blog, so then I don't have to worry about typing in the verse accurately.

Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

This is a fantastic online version of a classic reference tool. Basically this is a list of cross references based on particular passages. Simply click on the verse or passage you are studying, and you will find other references to other relevant Scripture.

Bible Commentaries Online

A list of classic Bible commentaries. Sometimes they're hard to understand, but they can be helpful when you're wanting more insight into a passage you are studying.

More Bible Study Resources

This is a page of links for articles and audio on the topic of studying the Bible. Some are not easy to read, but they are helpful.
The rest of this website has a tremendous amount of resources that may be of interest.
