We read The Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes by Kenneth Taylor at night with David. (We use and prefer the older edition because the pictures are realistic and not cartoony.) Perhaps we’re extremely ungodly parents, but we’ve not felt compelled to make Bethel (17 months) sit down through the story. Sometimes she becomes interested, and I’ll pull her up for a minute (for comparison, she doesn’t sit long for any book). Tonight she wanted to come up on the bed while David said his verse. She didn’t say anything, but she wanted to be a part. Usually, though, as long as she’s not making any distracting noise, and as long as she’s in the room with us, we don’t mind if she’s not sitting next to us the whole time.
David (just turned 3), on the other hand, has begun showing more of an interest in what we are reading. I’d say he answers the questions about 25% of the time. Other than that, he just smiles and says “I don’t know.” It’s hard to know if he really doesn’t remember, but Lee usually answers for him after pushing a little to see if he’s just being reluctant to perform.
