Several observations:
I’ve caught myself several times responding to my children’s whiny voices with a whiny voice of my own. Sigh. Maybe I need to start work on myself!
Second, Lee and I found out after a number of times instructing David not to complain any more that he had no idea what complaining was. (He’d immediately follow a command not to complain with a complaint!) So we started defining it for him. “David, Mommy said you may not have any more juice. You told me one time already that you are not happy. If you talk about juice again, you are complaining.” Once we started responding in this way, the persistence has sharply dropped. (although he still struggles)
Third, Bethel has developed this pitiful whine when she wants something. It sounds like she’s dying! So now we have to think through how we’re dealing with HER whining.
Fourth, I haven’t taken the time to talk about what God says about whining and complaining. Maybe we should have started there first.
