I’m not opposed to teaching children the fine arts from an early age, but I differ from some parents in that the arts and cultural attainment are not my goal. If my children do not know Matisse from Monet, I won’t despair. If they do not understand, appreciate, or cultivate beauty, then I will be disappointed. I find drawing attention to beauty in God’s creation and man’s works to be a fun challenge, and it’s a good discussion that I enjoy watching and learning from others.
But what does it profit me to teach my child to see beauty in the world around him if my kitchen is a mess?
