Just a bit ago, David was teasing his sister. I asked him if he was being kind. He immediately hid his eyes with his hands and wouldn’t answer. When I pulled him to my lap, I asked him to look at me, and had great difficulty looking up. This is the first time I can remember he has ever responded in any way that indicated his conscience was working. Before, his responses to my questions have always been glib and cheerful.
Here’s what I did. I asked him if he wanted to know why he was feeling unhappy. (no response) I had my Bible handy, so we read from Genesis about Adam and Eve. I asked David if he knew why Adam and Eve hid from God. I want to define the conscience for him that is emerging. They hid from God because they disobeyed. They did not want to see God. They felt guilty. They felt conviction. That was silly to hide from God. Could God see them? Yes, God did see Adam and Eve. He knew right where they were. At this point, David started to cry. He didn’t want to listen.
Then I told him that King David wrote a song when he sinned. We read several of these verses. I told our David that King David repented of his sin. That he asked God to forgive him and help him want to do right. At this point David didn’t want to get down, so I hugged and held him for about 20 minutes. I prayed outloud for him, and told God thank-you for helping him to understand when he sinned. Then I put him on the chair in the livingroom and turned on Scripture songs for him. He’s a sensitive one.
This was encouraging to me. The Holy Spirit is working in his heart. 🙂
