David has been going potty for all his toileting needs for the last several days, with a few “age-appropriate” lapses. I believe we have reached a tentative milestone. What made the difference?
I don’t think it was maturity.
I don’t think it was a new desire for the diecast airplanes Grandma bought him for each time he went poop.
I think we discovered what was motivating him. He didn’t want to sit on the toilet. When I explained that he would now be sitting on the toilet after each meal (for five minutes), he discovered it would be better to poop on his own and decide when he wanted to sit on the toilet. Perhaps his motivation was control, and controlling when to sit was more desirable than where.
He is not a more spiritual child for choosing to go– he’s simply being pragmatic. But I will not complain. I will still be yet holding my breath for awhile; after all, there is only one airplane left!
